Movement is essential for the function and health of our physical bodies.
Research also links movement and physical exercise to tremendous cognitive, emotional and general health benefits. Beneficial movement can happen in many ways – dance, walking, yoga, sports – and does not require any certain intensity or achievement in order to be effective. One way to approach physical movement as a source of well-being is through mindfulness.
Mindfulness is an intentional practice of paying attention to a specific focus, activity or experience without judgment or expectation. It requires intention and awareness and is a skill you can improve with regular practice. Mindfulness can be utilized in all sorts of ways, such as during meditation, through creative arts, and within relationships, and is especially useful with movement practices. Bringing mindfulness into your physical movement activities helps to strengthen communication and connection between the body and the brain and enhances our overall nervous system’s ability to respond, recover and restructure for healing and optimal health.
