Arts in health is a field dedicated to using the power of the arts to enhance health and well-being in healthcare and community settings.
This can be done by a professional Arts in Residence using music, drama, crafts, creative writing, design, film and video, painting, drawing, sculpture, and more.
The arts, humanities, design, and the creative arts therapies support self-care for clinical staff as well as the prevention, treatment, and management of illness and chronic disease in patients. Integrating the arts into healthcare have shown to improve the healthcare experience and aid in rehabilitation, recovery, human performance, and end-of-life care. The arts are proven to improve healthcare outcomes, contribute to patient and staff satisfaction, and lower healthcare costs. Additionally, arts in health supports health as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.
